S.A.M. - Software Automatic Mouth

S.A.M. or Software Automatic Mouth is a text to speech engine wrote and released in 1982 by Mark Barton for the Commodore 64 and several other 8-bit era machines. Most text to speech engines at the time required a separate cartridge which meant your users also had to have the cartridge for it to work on their machines. SAM was different in that it was entirely on disk and it can be called from BASIC or in 6510 machine language so you can include speech in your programs.

The disk came with some BASIC demo's including a number guess program.

Hacking a bit back in the 80's, I took apart an Atari 2600 joystick to expose the wires, plugged it into my Commodore 64 and wrote a small BASIC program to poll for the wires being touched which would trigger S.A.M. to say something for my bedrooms security system.
